Study name:
Breast Cancer Screening in High-Risk Women: Comparison of Magnetic
Resonance Imaging with Mamography
Description: The major goal of this project is to compare
the sensitivity and specificity of breast MRI with mammography
for use in breast cancer screening in high-risk women. This project
will compare screening of 300 high-risk women with mammography
versus MRI. The study will determine accuracy measures for both
imaging modalities and their comparative values. If MRI is shown
to be a better screening modality than mammography, future screening
recommendations could be altered and more lives saved due to earlier
detection of breast cancer in this population of women.
Eligibility: Subjects must be between the ages of 25 and
60, have a normal clinical breast exam, and have a strong famiy
history of breast/ovarian cancer reviewed for eligibility or have
a positive BRCA1 or BRCA2 genetic test. Women who have had a bilateral
mastectomy are not eligible for the study.

Genetic and Hormonal Risk Factors in African American
Women with Familial Breast Cancer
Description: The goal of this project is to improve understanding
of inherited breast cancer in young African American women by
investigating the role of genetic and hormonal risk factors. We
will recruit 50 women through the Family Cancer Genetics Network
to investigate genetic and hormonal factors contributing to their
personal/family history of breast cancer.
Eligibility: Subjects must be African American women with
breast cancer diagnosed either: 1) at less than or equal to 50
years of age, or 2) above age 50 with a personal family history
suggestive of hereditary predisposition to breast cancer.

Study Name:
Tampa Bay Ovarian Cancer Study
Description: The purpose of this study of women with epithelial
ovarian cancer is to compare risk factors, medical history, family
cancer history and response to treatment/survival between women
with and without germ-line BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations. Histologic,
pathologic and molecular characteristics between BRCA1 and BRCA2
associated epithelial ovarian tumors and sporadic tumors will
also be compared.
Eligibility:
- Women between the ages of 18 and 80 years of age diagnosed
with primary epithelial ovarian cancer during the case accrual
period in Hillsborough and Pinellas counties.

Evaluation of Lysophosphatidic Acid (LPA) as a Biomarker in
Ovarian Cancer
Description: The purpose of this study is to investigate
plasma LPA levels in ovarian cancer. The level of plasma LPA
will be measured in ovarian cancer patients and healthy control
women and the level of CA-125 will be evaluated in ovarian cancer
patients to: test whether plasma LPA levels are elevated in ovarian
cancer patients compared with controls, test whether plasma LPA
levels correlate with ovarian cancer stage, determine whether
LPA levels, alone or in combination with CA125 levels, are a better
predictor of ovarian cancer stage than CA125 levels alone, determine
whether LPA levels are prognostic for disease-free survival in
ovarian cancer patients, and develop a mathematical model of the
sensitivity and specificity of LPA as a time-dependent measure
of disease recurrence.
Eligibility:
- Ovarian cancer patients: Women between the ages of 18 and
80 years diagnosed with primary epithelial ovarian cancer in Hillsborough
or Pinellas counties
- Healthy control women: Women
18 years of age or older seen at Moffitt’s Lifetime Cancer
Screening for routine cancer screening who have no history
or symptoms of cancer and have no known active gynecologic disease
(i.e., infection, endometriosis, fibroids, cervical dysplaisa)
- Women
who have both ovaries
- Women
who have no family history of breast or ovarian cancer.

Investigation of the Genetic Etiology of Familial
Non-Medullary Thyroid Cancer (NMTC)
Description: The major goal of this study is to enhance
understanding of NMTC by examining 30 families with 2 or more
NMTC cases by collecting information about cancer and other conditions,
and their tumor specimens will be examined for specific characteristics..
Eligibility:
Subjects must be from families with 2 or more NMTC cases.
